Shakespeare Anyone?

David Morneau's "No Pianos Allowed" concert is on Wednesday, 12/8.

David will be presenting three songs from his LOVE SONGS PROJECT:

  • "Behind Corneal Gates," Shakespeare's Sonnet 56 with poetry by Patricia Carragon
  • "Music In Me," Shakespeare's Sonnet 8 with poetry by Susan Maurer
  • "Now I Love You Best," Shakespeare's Sonnet 115 with poetry by Roxanne Hoffman

These will be performed by Mary Hubbell (soprano), Roberta Michel (flute) and Ernesto Ramos (guitar).

LOVE SONGS is a new songwriting project that pairs sonnets by William Shakespeare with poems by contemporary writers. Each collaborating poet selects one sonnet and pairs it with a work of their own—an existing poem or one written especially for the project.  David is setting each pair to music.
You can preview "Behind Corneal Gates"  at the 5OF4 website: http://5of4.com/love_songs/sounds.html

The text for all 3 pieces as well the other pairs selected for the project can be read at the 5OF4 website:

Susan Maurer Gives an Impromptu Reading at Teardrop Park, NYC

Poets Wear Prada poet Susan Maurer took a copy of Bob Heman's CLWN WR (issue 48 which contains her poem "Night Walking" about Teardrop Park ) to a park tour Dorothea Basile recently lead at that park, one of a series of her tours of Battery Park's Conservancy's public art collections. Ms. Basile asked Ms. Maurer to do a reading of her poem on the spot which she very happily did.  Susan Maurer says "It was a beautiful day and it was really fun."

Here's the poem reprinted with the permission of the author:

for the sudden

Susan Maurer | Raptor Rhapsody

For quite some years, Susan Maurer has had her incredible poems published across the United States and abroad. How great to have many of these poems collected in this one lovely volume.— Bill Kushner, Author of He Dreams of Waters, Night Fishing, Head, and Love Uncut.

This is one honest broad and it shows in her work. Brilliant!
— Brigid Murnaghan, Beat Poet & Curator of the Sunday Afternoon Reading Series at The Back Fence, NYC.

It's both innocent and passionate…a beautiful book.— Mil Thompson, Analyst and Editor

Gifted and surprising.
— Nelson Lyon, Writer for Saturday Night Live, Writer & Director of The Telephone Book, Co-Producer with Hal Willner of William S. Burroughs’ Spoken Word CD album Dead City Radio

The overall tone of the book is wry, jaunty, ironic, and stoic--a fresh and original voice.— Robert Kramer, Home Planet News

Stradivarius

You are our instrument.
I dial the number
hand you the telephone.
You tell me he says

“I got your letter,”
You chuckle, repeat.
He “And I forgive you.”
And he asks
“Is Anthony there?”
And I say
“I did him twice last night”
and you convulse with laughter,
say “No you didn’t.”
And he says
“There’ll be reprisals.”
And I want you to
tell him the turkey was good
but you two begin talking of other things.

You’re playing our song.
