Poets Wear Prada at CUNY Chapfest Bookfair May 3 & 4 in NYC

PWP's Contribution to CUNY Chapfest Super Chap Anthology

Please join Poets Wear Prada, our Chief Executive Editor, Roxanne Hoffman, and our Creative Director & Production Editor, Jack Cooper, at the fifth annual CUNY Chapfest Bookfair this Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4, held at the CUNY Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Avenue at 34th Street, NYC.  The festival is taking place in the Proshansky Auditorium and on the C-Level.

The CUNY Chapfest celebrates the chapbook as a work of art and as a medium for alternative and emerging writers and publishers.

Poets Wear Prada will be among the sixty chapbook publishers showcased at this event.  We will be presenting chapbooks by Mary Orovan, Erik La Prade, Austin Alexis, Joel Allegretti, Richard Marx Weinraub, Laura Vookles, Tantra Zawadi,  Michael Montlack, Ice Gayle Johnson, Gil Fagiani, Maria Lisella, and more.  A limited number of signed first editions will available for some of our titles.

To celebrate the festival's fifth year,  Lost & Found: The CUNY Poetics Document Initiative has created a  superchap — a mini-anthology.  Each participating publisher was invited to fill one page of the chapbook however they wanted. The resulting book was assembled and designed by Megan Mangum, our Lost & Found designer,  with the cover designed by book artist Jeff Peterson of Double Cross Press. The printing was done by Peter Viegas and the Graduate Center Graphic Arts shop.


Friday book fair hours are from 12:00pm to 6:30pm;  Saturday hours from 12:00pm to 5:00pm. 

The festival is free and open to the public, though workshops  require advance registration and some may require a small materials fee.

John Jack Jackie (Edward) COOPER is the author of "Ten" (Poets Wear Prada, 2012), preview of his forthcoming “Aphorithms.” His American English translation of "Wax Women," with French texts of the original poems by Jean-Pierre Lemesle and photographs by Henry Jacobs (International Art Office, Paris: 1985), drew acclaim and dedicated full-window display from the Gotham Book Mart in New York—legendary fishing hole to the “wise”—released in the United States the following year. His work has appeared online (exitstrata.com), his reviews in "The Times Book Review" and "Publisher's Weekly." He has read manuscripts for Farrar, Straus & Giroux; served the Modern Language Association (MLA) as research associate;  taught English for eleven years to refugees for the federally funded ELESAIR Project; and was an XML specialist and content production editor for McGraw-Hill/GROW Network. Currently, he is co-publisher and production editor for Poets Wear Prada, a small literary press based in Frank Sinatra's hometown, Hoboken, New Jersey.

Robert Savino

Gail Goldstein is a retired teacher who works with autistic children. She is published in numerous poetry anthologies and literary magazines ("Toward Forgiveness," "Mobius," "PPA Literary Review," "Long Island Sounds," etc.) and has won various poetry awards (Mobius, Farmingdale, Princess Ronkonkoma). She is on the editorial staff of several poetry anthologies. "Whispers and Shouts," an anthology of poetry written by women from Long Island, will be Gail’s first book. It is coming out later this year. Gail’s other passion is music. A percussionist, Gail is part of the drUUmatics, a West African drum ensemble performance group. Gayle Teller

Nassau County Poet Laureate (2009-2011), Gayl Teller received an MA from Columbia University and another MA from Queens College, CUNY.  Her poetry collections include "At the Intersection of Everything You Have Ever Loved," "Shorehaven," "Moving Day," and "One Small Kindness."  Her most recent poetry book, "Inside the Embrace," was selected in national competition to be published by WordTech/Cherry Grove. For 14 years,  director and founder of  Mid-Island Y JCC Poetry Reading in Plainview, NY, a reading sponsored in part by the NYSCA,  she's taught in the English department of Hofstra University since 1985.  Finalist for Nassau County Poet Laureate in 2007, she has conducted numerous poetry workshops and seminars and been the feature reader at many universities, poetry centers, and libraries.  Her work has received the Edgar Allan Poe Prize, the Peninsula Library Poetry Prize, a National Federation of State Poetry Societies Prize, a National League of American PEN Women Prize, and The Connecticut Writer Prize; "One Small Kindness" was a finalist for the Blue Light Poetry Prize.  Her poems are widely published and anthologized, and her book reviews have appeared frequently in "Small Press Review."

Herbert Siegel

Herbert Siegel, Ph.D., has been a CEO of major public companies and is the recipient of numerous professional certifications and awards. Chicago hair stylist, professional photographer Ice Gayle Johnson kicks off her book tour for “The Key: Lady Grizzly & Sir Charles Otter,” her debut collection of poems, with a spotlight reading at the 40th annual City College of New York (CCNY) Poetry Festival, Jack Cooper, Production Editor at Poets Wear Prada, announced today. Dubbed “Woodstock of the Spoken Word,” the all-day, all-verse event takes place Friday May 11, from 9:15AM to 5:00PM, in Theater B of Aaron Davis Hall located on campus at West 135th Street and Convent Avenue. Fellow Chicago native Patricia Smith, with Richard Tillinghast, originally of Memphis, Tennessee, will be featured guest poets this year.

Announcing publication of “The Key” recently, Jack Cooper described Johnson’s book as “profoundly beautiful: an unexpected turn of the lock. Hidden chambers of the heart lead from a girlhood kitchen to the panorama of windows that survive the woman's adult life.” Johnson, the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, shares her very personal experiences of love and loss, first the familial and then the romantic, in her debut collection. Her mentor and longtime friend, the poet Barry Wallenstein, founder of The Poetry Outreach Center at City College, invited Johnson to take part in the festival where upwards of 150 students from as many as 50 New York public schools will recite their poems. Winners of the festival’s citywide high school contest will also read, the top-three receiving cash prizes awarded by Alfred A. Knopf, the New York publisher. Johnson will be among the invited published poets from around the country joining City College students, alumni, and faculty in reading their work to close out the event.

Of Johnson, Barry Wallenstein, himself, author of six poetry collections, “Drastic Collections” (New York Quarterly, 2012) his most recent, has written “Ice is anything but cold,” and of her poems, “These confessions of unashamed love, expressed frankly and directly, are warm enough to heat a city.”

Johnson continues her book tour, visiting New Jersey next month to read on Wednesday June 6th at the Williams Center for the Arts, located at 1 Williams Plaza in Rutherford. In addition to reading from her new book, Johnson has been invited to make a brief presentation on the life and work of Williams. The event is sponsored by The William Carlos Williams Poetry Cooperative of Southern Bergen County and hosted by the poet John J. Trause. Free and open to the public, the monthly first Wednesday poetry series starts at 7:00PM and includes an open reading. Also in attendance will be The Red Wheelbarrow Poets, participants of the local peer-to-peer poetry workshops led by Jim Klein.

The author returns to New York City as featured poet on July 9th for Peter Chelnik’s Go Cat Go! reading series, a monthly poetry event, at Gracie’s Corner Diner, 352 East 82nd Street (at 1st Avenue). Johnson’s debut poetry collection shares her very personal experiences of love and loss, first the familial and then the romantic. The books begins with scenes from life with a mysterious, mysteriously well-educated father, lone survivor of Nazi tyranny in a Lithuanian town living out his days as a janitor in Chicago; a neurotic, often-abusive mother, rival for the father’s affection; and an older sibling, rival for the mother’s. Mother and daughter become estranged, reuniting shortly before the mother’s death. The book ends with a sequence of love poems recounting romances mostly broken but still treasured.

“Europa/Nippon/New York: Poems/Not-Poems”

“Europa/Nippon/New York” is Joel Allegretti’s second book project with Poets Wear Prada. The Hoboken-based press brought out “Thrum,” Allegretti’s meditation on stringed musical instruments, in 2010. Two previous collections, “Father Silicon” and “The Plague Psalms,” 2006 and 2000, respectively, were published by The Poet’s Press. Hoboken, NJ, April 27, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Poets Wear Prada announced today publication of “Europa/Nippon/New York: Poems/Not Poems” by the American poet Joel Allegretti. “The Kansas City Star” counted Allegretti’s "Father Silicon" among the "100 Noteworthy Books of 2006," a list that included Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road” and “Against the Day” by Thomas Pynchon.

“The trip is shorter than Phileas Fogg's— the book takes but a fraction of the time to read; still, Jules Verne (who figures prominently in it) remains in the balloon’s gondola,” said Jack Cooper, who as production editor at Poets Wear Prada guided “Europa/Nippon/New York” to its elegant landing. “The difference is Fogg’s out and Allegretti’s pulling the strings,” he continued. “‘Europa/Nippon/New York’ is my jet-setting, la dolce vita collection,” said Joel Allegretti. “I absolutely love the cover! It shows a side of Steve I never knew.” Steve Dalachinsky, a widely celebrated poet, created the collages featured on both front and back of the book.

This is Joel Allegretti’s second book project with Poets Wear Prada. In 2010, the Hoboken-based press brought out “Thrum,” Allegretti’s meditation on stringed musical instruments. His two previous collections “Father Silicon” and “The Plague Psalms” were released by The Poet’s Press in 2006 and 2000, respectively. KAT  G E O R G E S is an NYC poet, playwright, performer and designer. Her full-length poetry collection, Our Lady of the Hunger will be released soon on Three Rooms Press. In New York since 2003, she has directed numerous Off-Broadway plays, curated poetry readings (including the bi-monthly Son of a Pony poetry reading series at Cornelia Street Cafe), and performed widely. She is co-founder and editor of Three Rooms Press; their most recent books include Maintenant 6: A Journal of Contemporary Dada Writing and Art; Have a NYC: New York Short Stories; and Mike Watt: On and Off Bass, a collection of photos and distilled tour diaries from the great punk rock bass player.


PETER  C A R L A F T E S  is an NYC playwright, poet, and performer. He is the author of 12 plays, including a noir treatment of Knut Hamsun’s Hunger, and his own celebrity rehab center spoof, Spin-Dry. Carlaftes has recently published three books: A Year on Facebook (humor), Drunkyard Dog (poetry) and Triumph for Rent (3 plays). He is co-founder and editor of Three Rooms Press; their most recent books include Maintenant 6: A Journal of Contemporary Dada Writing and Art; Have a NYC: New York Short Stories; and Mike Watt: On and Off Bass, a collection of photos and distilled tour diaries from the great punk rock bass player. 

PETER  C H E L N I K's latest book is Strawberry Harmony:New Poems (Little Sky Press, March 2010).  His chapbook "Paradise Highway" was published by Poets Wear Prada in 2007. Other books include Railroad Heart, East Coast Line, Manhattan Wilderness, Eternity Road and Wildflower Serenade. He has had seven plays produced Off-Off-Broadway. These dramatic works include Street Rag, Prairie Fire, Parking Lot, Moving Target, Scarsdale Station and Tremont Vortex. Peter has also written Trick Bag, a novel of the 1960's. And yes, he does believe "the word will set you free."

GIL  F A G I A N I’s poetry collections include: Rooks (Rain Mountain Press, 2007), Grandpa’s Wine (Poets Wear Prada, 2008); translated into Italian by Paul D’Agostino, A Blanquito in El Barrio (Rain Mountain Press, 2009), Chianti in Connecticut (Bordighera Press, 2010) and just recently, Serfs of Psychiatry (Finishing Line Press).  He has translated into English poetry written in Italian, Abruzzese dialect and Spanish. Gil co-curates the Italian American Writers’ Association’s monthly readings at the Cornelia Street Café and is the Associate Editor of Feile-Festa: A Literary Arts Magazine.

MICHAEL T.  Y O U N G  has published three collections of poetry: Transcriptions of Daylight, Because the Wind Has Questions and, most recently, Living in the Counterpoint, which was published by Finishing Line Press.  His next full-length collection, The Beautiful Moment of Being Lost, will be published in 2013 by Black Coffee Press.  He received a fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and was twice nominated for a Pushcart Prize.  He received a William Stafford Award and the Chaffin Poetry Award.  His work has appeared or is forthcoming in numerous print and online journals including Fogged Clarity, Iodine Poetry Journal, The Potomac Review, The Raintown Review, and The Same.  His work is also in the anthologies Phoenix Rising and Chance of a Ghost and forthcoming in The Bug Book, and In the Black/In the Red.  He lives with his wife and children in Jersey City, New Jersey.

JACK COOPER has read for Farrar, Straus and Giroux , served as research associate for the Modern Language Association, was an ESL teacher for ELESAIR Project, and is now Production Editor at Poets Wear Prada. His American English translation of poems by Jean-Pierre Lemesle, "Wax Women," with photos by Henry Jacobs was published November 1985 by International Art Office, Paris.
