Short Poem Enthusiasts and Emily Dickinson Fans Get Ready for Brevitas at the Bowery Poetry Club

 New York, NY, October 15, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Short poem enthusiasts and Emily Dickinson fans get ready. City Lore, an organization devoted to urban folk culture, and the Bowery Poetry Club will present the 7th Annual Brevitas Festival of The Short Poem on Sunday, November 14 from 2 to 6 p.m. Brevitas is an internet community of invited poets who email one to two original poems (14 lines max) to the group on the 1st and the 15th of each month. This reading and book release party is the annual occasion for Brevitas poets to actually meet in person. The program features each poet's top hits for 2010. Brevitas’ founders are poets Jim Pignetti and Steve Zeitlin, founder and executive director of City Lore. This year’s host is poet Flash Rosenberg, also known as a cartoonist, photographer, humorist, turtle wrangler and Artist-in-Residence for Live from the New York Public Library.

Brevitas will honor Emily Dickinson as Historical Guest Poet for her divine role as Patron Saint of the Short Poem. Poet and performer, Shelley Miller, will read a selection of Emily’s poems. There will also be a screening of “Emily Dickinson – Her True Self” an animated short by Flash Rosenberg, produced by the Lower Eastside Girls Club.

Also, a special Brevitas poetry dedication will be made for jailed Chinese dissident and recipient of this year’s Nobel Peace prize, Liu Xiaobo.

Iris Berman is a visual artist, photographer and poet. Her published journals include Nomad’s Choir, Home Planet News, Errato, Brownstone Poets, Rogue Scholars, Stained Sheets, White Rabbit, MOBLIUS, THE POETRY MAGAZINE, and nationally in the Song of the San Joaquin and Back Street Quarterly. She has also published three chapbooks, Motherlode, The Little Book of Flowers and The Little Book of Fairy Tales and Love Poems – the last published by Poets Wear Prada Press. She has studied with Louise Gluck, William Packard, Barry Goldensohn, Charles Simic, and most recently with Patrick Rosal at Poets House.

Bob Hart has gone from middle age to old age these last years writing poetry.  He has seen word scenes like 77 Barrow Street, Centerfold Coffee House, ABC No Rio and most lately, the new Pink Pony at Cornelia Street Café, hoping they enjoyed him as much as he enjoyed them.

Iris Berman is a graduate of Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont and also attended The Art Students League in Manhattan. Her major influence was Richard Pousette-Dart from whom she learned much about art and spirituality. Her artwork has been exhibited in several solo and many group exhibitions. After many years of not writing, she walked into a poetry reading and started writing again. She has since studied with Louise Gluck, Barry Goldensohn and William Packard to name just a few. Her most recent workshop was led by Patrick Rosal at Poets House.

She has published locally in journals such as Rogue Scholars' Rogue Gallery, Nomads Choir, Home Planet News, Park Slope Poetry Project’s Erato, and nationally in Song of the San Joaquin and Backstreet Poets Quarterly. She has appeared at open mics and has been a featured reader at many poetry venues throughout New York City.>

It was the little girl’s hair They worried about Shining, golden nuggets Of light leaping from strand To strand It made them afraid, curious, Awesome, dumbstruck, blind, In hate and in love So they hid her away Forbid her to leave The dark and lonely room And there she sat Year after year Framed in the backlit Picture window Singing to herself And the birds answered back One spring day A fine young man Followed the beautiful music To the one in the window The old ones were afraid They sent her far away To a barren desert Where she wouldn’t stray But a song filled with the lute And the flute and dancing in May Possessed the young man Led him to her little house And there they stay Together to this day.
